Patikul, PHILIPPINES: Combat troops from Philippine Marines are deployed in Patikul in southern Jolo island 14 September 2006 as part of the massive military operations involving 5,000 government security forces hunting al-Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) militants. Two Indonesian fugitives behind the deadly 2002 Bali bombings, Umar Patek and Dulmatin from the JI are being sheltered by Abu Sayyaf, a local Muslim extremist group in the jungles of Jolo island. US military forces are deployed in Jolo not for combat role but providing intelligence assistance while Australia offered to help establish riverine units to patrol waterways.
