Around 61 fatalities have already been reported in bloody clashes between 200 armed followers of self-proclaimed Sultan of Sulu Jamalul Kiram III and Malaysian security forces since March 5. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has called for a ceasefire to the conflict which has also displaced thousands in affected areas and has triggered an exodus of Filipino workers and families towards neighboring Sulu province in the Philippines. The Filipino gunmen, from the restive southern provinces of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi in Mindanao, crossed over to neighboring Sabah last February 12 to lay claim to territory as ancestral land, triggering a standoff and clashes with Malaysian security forces.
