Josie lived in Japan with her parents Venessia and Joseph, an engineer in the air force, until the age of six. The family's paediatrician told Venessia to look up the word 'transgender' and the family began researching children who want to change sex. Josie was given a female birth certificate, passport and social security number, grew her hair and dressed exclusively as a girl. The family faced prejudice from other parents on the conservative air force base who tried to prevent Josie going to school. The Romeros returned to Arizona two years ago and now Venessia home schools Josie and Jade. Josie will begin taking hormone blockers in a few months time before beginning female hormones at the age of 12.
