Cameron hailed the first recipients of the Arctic Star medal as a 'group of heroes', as he presented them with the newly-created award during a ceremony at Downing Street on March 19. The creation of the Arctic Star medal, along with the new Bomber Command Clasp, were announced in December 2012, 67 years after the war, following a long-running campaign. The new Arctic Star rewards World War II war heroes who served on the Arctic Convoys on ships including HMS Belfast on missions to keep open supply lines to Soviet ports from 1941, travelling what Winston Churchill dubbed the 'worst journey in the world'.
