Bissell' (Gold Medal) carpet sweeper, c.1870s.

UNITED STATES - JANUARY 22: Bissell' (Gold Medal) carpet sweeper, c.1870s. Melville Reuben Bissell patented the first carpet sweeper in 1876, and called it 'Grand Rapids' after his home town in Michigan. His device was a success and, though various other companies, notably, Eubank, marketed their own models, the name Bissell was dominant. Carpet sweepers continued to be popular, although they became superceded by the more powerful vacuum cleaner. (Photo by Science & Society Picture Library/SSPL/Getty Images)
