Eyewitnesses said a suicide bomber breached the perimeter of the compound at around 5.30am, on the day Afghanistan marks its independence from colonial rule. A series of explosions, bursts of fire and single shots were heard throughout the day. French. American, New Zealand and British forces all responded to the attack, despite handing responsibility to Afghan forces earlier this year.
