Nubians, originally from Sudan, have suffered statelessness for many years in Kenya since they were brought into the country as soldiers for the British in the early 1900s and settled in 'Kibra' meaning 'forest' in Nubian. The tense elections are seen as a crucial test for Kenya, with leaders vowing to avoid a repeat of the bloody 2007-8 post-poll violence in which over 1,100 people were killed and observers repeatedly warning of the risk of renewed conflict.
