Afghan mechanics, serving with the Afghan National Army Air Corps (ANA AC) work on the engine of a Soviet designed a Hind Mi-35 attack helicopter at Kabul airport, Afghanistan. Most of the pilots were trained in Russia during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Nato's International Security Assistance Force refused to let the Afghan pilots arm their aircraft for fear of civilian casualties and green on blue (friendly fire) attacks. In August 2012 a member of the Afghan Air Corps turned his weapon on his American mentors, killing three.
